Mr Iain Hathorn


Mr Hathorn is a Consultant ENT Surgeon working in Edinburgh since 2013. His interests include nasal and sinus disease and their medical and surgical management, as well as general ENT. Along with a neurosurgical colleague he founded the Edinburgh Endoscopic Anterior Skull Base service which attracts referrals from Lothian, Fife, Forth Valley, Borders, and Dumfries and Galloway. 

Mr Hathorn is a member of the Skull Base team at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and provides endoscopic support to the Head and Neck Cancer team and Thyroid Eye Disease team. He is a member of the British Rhinological Society, for which he has been the Scottish representative on council for the last 6 years (2015 - 2021). He has helped produce national subspecialty guidelines for the medical and surgical management of sinus disease and loss of smell related to COVID. He frequently undertakes surgery for benign and malignant sinus and nasal disease, with a specific interest in endoscopic sinus surgery and its extended applications, such as frontal, lacrimal, orbital and skull base surgery.

Mr. Hathorn has a strong research background, particularly in chronic rhinosinusitis and has completed a subspecialist Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery Fellowship at the renowned St. Paul’s Sinus Centre, Vancouver. He leads the Edinburgh site for a multicentre UK wide study looking into the best management for patients with sinusitis. He is an invited speaker and faculty for many National and International meetings and surgical training courses. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Edinburgh and is actively involved with training both medical students and postgraduate doctors. He has been the Associate Director of Medical Education, and Undergraduate Lead for NHS Lothian.
